Bikers at odds with Tucson Skate Park

BMX riders are upset their bikes are not allowed in a new south side skate park.

The city of Tucson celebrated with a grand opening of the facility located at Santa Rita Park on Saturday.

Meantime, RedEndo BMX put on a silent protest nearby. Ian Abbot is outraged. "Take down that rolling gate right there and just let bikes come in and use the park too."

Proponents to keep the BMX-ers out say the bikes will damage skate parks. They also say the two could collide making it a safety issue.

BMX bike riders say there is no proof bikes will damage the park. Plus they say it will keep kids safer and out of traffic.

Abbot says other nearby cites have no issues with their combo skate and bike parks. "Our issue isn't with skaters. It's the city officials. It's the Parks and Rec and their policies."

The father of Kory Laos, who was killed riding his bike almost 2 years ago, says a new BMX bike park will solve everything.

"Since our family lost him we've been on a mission to help the city and county get our children off the streets and to a safer place to ride."

Scott Laos says the county has donated land for a new bike park near W. River Rd. and N. Shannon Rd.

He says the Kory Laos Memorial Freestyle BMX Bicycle Park will cost about $1.5 million. Laos says funds are still needed.

  i was wondering if there was any updates or news about trying to get bikes into this skate park i dropped buy to check it out for the first time and its pretty sweet. i ride the bike park in chandler but its just to much of a drive to ride there anymore for me. hope we can get something going for this park just not right to have all these parks and no were for bikers to ride thanks
